Human high-density chondrocyte pellets seeded with human respiratory epithelial cells and cultured in AECGM. The composite cultures were stained after 7 (a) and 14 (b) d with the antibody 34betaE12 (red), a marker for basal and goblet cells. Arrows devote epithelial cells attached to the surface of the pellet. No increase in hREC number could be detected from day 7 until day 14.
