euphyllum tree in plot 1 (see Table  1 ).

The data came from 16 experimental seed plots that we established on the forest floor (Table  1 ).

All plots were established between late September and early November (Table  1 ) and located at least 100 m apart, except for three pairs of plots that were established within 100 m of each other, near one of the focal female trees, because the numbers of both fruiting fig trees and male Canarium trees were limited during the study period; plot 7 was close to plot 1, plot 9 was close to plot 4, and plot 13 was close to plot 3.

Ages of seeds at the end of the study varied because seeds were placed out on different dates, but ranged from 20 to 22 months (Table  1 ).

Of these animals, only three species of mammals ( Menetes berdmorei , Leopoldamys sabanus , and Maxomys surifer ) were recorded to remove marked samples (Table  1 ).

surifer was the most frequently photographed (119 photos from nine plots, in total), but we could confirm the removal of a marked sample in only one case (Table  1 ).

Over the four-month period following seed placement, almost all samples were removed from female Canarium plots by the end of the intensive study period, except for plot 6, in which 42 seeds remained at that time (Table  1 ).

In contrast, more than half of the samples remained in male Canarium plots and fig plots, except for plots 7, 9, and 13, from which almost all samples were removed within four months of seed placement (Table  1 ).

berdmorei , or both, were frequently recorded in female Canarium plots or focal trees established near one of the female Canarium plots, but not in others (Table  1 ).
