Fig 1
Mean proportion of seeds removed for each exclusion treatment in the different habitat types of the study area (Centro de Pesquisas e Conservação da Natureza—Pró-Mata) in the Araucaria forest from southern Brazil. Experiments were conducted in 2003 and 2004. Codes of exclusion treatments are as follows: ALMG = access to all mammal groups, SMRO = small-rodent access. Results of the three-factor ANOVA with randomization tests are in Table 1. Different capital letters above bars indicate a posteriori significant differences for contrasts between years within each habitat type and different lowercase letters indicate a posteriori significant differences for contrasts among habitat types within each year (P < 0.002 for all comparisons, see Table 1). Error bars show standard errors
Removal rates were higher in 2004 than in 2003 and also were significantly lower in the open field, when compared with both forested types (edge or interior) in both years (Fig. 1 , Table 1 b).
The analysis of variance also indicated a significant interaction between ‘year’ and ‘habitat’ on the rates of seed-removal (Fig. 1 , Table 1 a).
This interaction appears to be driven by this relative increase in 2004 removal rates caused by small mammals in the open field compared to the previous year (Fig. 1 ).
