Beneficial plant–bacterial interactions in the rhizosphere. In the rhizosphere, PGPR populations are selected by specific root exudates. Motility (1), adherence (2) and growth (3) are important steps of rhizosphere competence. PGPR strains could then improve the plant growth by releasing nutrients and phytohormones and/or inhibit root diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi. Inhibition of the pathogen could be indirect through elicitation of plant ISR (4) or direct through the production of secondary metabolites (5). This review specifically focuses on the bacterial traits involved in rhizosphere competence (steps 1 to 3)

colonization and survival within the rhizosphere (henceforth
defined as rhizosphere competence; Fig. 1).
