Differentiating characteristics of Alcaligenes species and species that previously have been transferred from the genus Alcaligenes to other genera, including Ralstonia eutropha (formerly Alcaligenes eutrophus), Variovorax paradoxus (formerly Alcaligenes paradoxus), Halomonas aesta (formerly Alcaligenes aestus, Deleya aesta), Halomonas aquamarina (formerly Alcaligenes aquamarinus, Deleya aquamarina), Halomonas cupida (formerly Alcaligenes cupidus, Deleya cupida), Halomonas pacifica (formerly Alcaligenes pacificus, Deleya pacifica), Halomonas venusta (formerly Alcaligenes venustus, Deleya venusta), and Carbophilus carboxidus (formerly “Alcaligenes carboxidus”)
The species reclassified as members of the genera Ralstonia,
Halomonas, and Carbophilus can be easily distinguished from the
genus Alcaligenes based on their fatty acid profiles, quinones,
and/or polyamine patterns (Table BXII.β.29).
Likewise, the fatty acid profile of Taylorella species with the
major compounds C18:1, C16:0,
C18:0, and C14:03OH (Rossau et al., 1987;
Jang et al., 2001) does not reflect the characteristics of the
family, i.e., the compound C17:0 lo (Table BXII.β.29) is
missing and the predominant compound, C18:1, is not a
major fatty acid in the profile of the family members.
