In this season, the geopotential height at 850 hPa and surface pressure increase substantially at high latitudes (Fig. 11 a), while they decrease at mid-latitudes.

Those anomalies in the atmospheric circulation project strongly on the Arctic Oscillation (AO)(Thomson and Wallace 1998 ), defined here as the first EOF of the geopotential height at 850 hPa, and the AO index significantly decreases in SON during the simulation (Fig. 11 b).
